Providing Clarity about Jinn

There are good jinn and bad jinn.

Bad jinn like to waste human being’s precious time. It’s one of their agendas, because time is all a human has. They hate productivity and love distractions, because the bad ones are a human’s enemy. You could say the bad ones are the devil’s minions. Well, they’re also his descendants. They’re made of energy and can manifest into whatever they’re permitted to manifest into and are capable of manipulating physical matter.

They are physically powerful. Yet, in principle, we are more powerful because we have the power of intellect. In contrast, they have little intellect. However, similar to us, they have the power of choice to do good or bad.

They also have a major case of inferiority complex (thankfully, we don’t).
They reigned the Earth long before our existence and they shed their very own “blood” on Earth. So they were corrupt (the majority, but certainly not all of them, as some of them are righteous beings). Yes, like humans and everything in the universe that is destined by Allah to live for a limited time — followed by death, followed by resurrection on The Day of Judgement — they die too, but they live very long lives.

We inherited the Earth after them, and it appears that they were downgraded from their previous way of life in some way, due to their self-induced corruption. Look around. Some humans are following the jinns’ footsteps. You have to look at the big picture to be able to see that.

Allah informed humankind about jinn extensively throughout the Qur’an, as follows:

Say, [O Muhammad], “It has been revealed to me that a group of the jinn listened and said, ‘Indeed, we have heard an amazing Qur’an. It guides to the right course, and we have believed in it. And we will never associate with our Lord anyone. And [it teaches] that exalted is the nobleness of our Lord; He has not taken a wife or a son. And that our foolish one has been saying about Allah an excessive transgression. And we had thought that mankind and the jinn would never speak about Allah a lie. And there were men from mankind who sought refuge in men from the jinn, so they [only] increased them in burden. And they had thought, as you thought, that Allah would never send anyone [as a messenger]. And we have sought [to reach] the heaven but found it filled with powerful guards and burning flames. And we do not know [therefore] whether evil is intended for those on earth or whether their Lord intends for them a right course. And among us are the righteous, and among us are [others] not so; we were [of] divided ways. And we have become certain that we will never cause failure to Allah upon earth, nor can we escape Him by flight. And when we heard the guidance, we believed in it. And whoever believes in his Lord will not fear deprivation or burden. And among us are Muslims [in submission to Allah ], and among us are the unjust. And whoever has become Muslim –  those have sought out the right course. But as for the unjust, they will be, for Hell, firewood.’
Surat AL-Jinn – Ayah 1-15

And [mention, O Muhammad], the Day when He will gather them together [and say], “O company of jinn, you have [misled] many of mankind.” And their allies among mankind will say, “Our Lord, some of us made use of others, and we have [now] reached our term, which you appointed for us.” He will say, “The Fire is your residence, wherein you will abide eternally, except for what Allah wills. Indeed, your Lord is Wise and Knowing.”
Surat AL-An’am – Ayah 128

“O company of jinn and mankind, did there not come to you messengers from among you, relating to you My verses and warning you of the meeting of this Day of yours?” They will say, “We bear witness against ourselves”; and the worldly life had deluded them, and they will bear witness against themselves that they were disbelievers.
Surat AL-An’am – Ayah 130

[ Allah ] will say, “Enter among nations which had passed on before you of jinn and mankind into the Fire.” Every time a nation enters, it will curse its sister until, when they have all overtaken one another therein, the last of them will say about the first of them “Our Lord, these had misled us, so give them a double punishment of the Fire. He will say, “For each is double, but you do not know.”
Surat AL-A’araf – Ayah 38

And We have certainly created for Hell many of the jinn and mankind. They have hearts with which they do not understand, they have eyes with which they do not see, and they have ears with which they do not hear. Those are like livestock; rather, they are more astray. It is they who are the heedless.
Surat AL-A’araf – Ayah 179

Except whom your Lord has given mercy, and for that He created them. But the word of your Lord is to be fulfilled that, “I will surely fill Hell with jinn and men all together.”
Surat Yusuf – Ayah 119

Say, “If mankind and the jinn gathered in order to produce the like of this Qur’an, they could not produce the like of it, even if they were to each other assistants.”
Surat AL-Isra’ – Ayah 88

And [mention] when We said to the angels, “Prostrate to Adam,” and they prostrated, except for Iblees. He was of the jinn and departed from the command of his Lord. Then will you take him and his descendants as allies other than Me while they are enemies to you? Wretched it is for the wrongdoers as an exchange.
Surat AL-Kahf – Ayah 50

And gathered for Solomon were his soldiers of the jinn and men and birds, and they were [marching] in rows.
Surat AL-Naml – Ayah 17

A powerful one from among the jinn said, “I will bring it to you before you rise from your place, and indeed, I am for this [task] strong and trustworthy.”
Surat AL-Naml – Ayah 39

And if we had willed, We could have given every soul its guidance, but the word from Me will come into effect [that] “I will surely fill Hell with jinn and people all together.
Surat AL-Sajda – Ayah 13

And to Solomon [We subjected] the wind –  its morning [journey was that of] a month – and its afternoon [journey was that of] a month, and We made flow for him a spring of [liquid] copper. And among the jinn were those who worked for him by the permission of his Lord. And whoever deviated among them from Our command –  We will make him taste of the punishment of the Blaze.
Surat Saba’ – Ayah 12

And when We decreed for Solomon death, nothing indicated to the jinn his death except a creature of the earth eating his staff. But when he fell, it became clear to the jinn that if they had known the unseen, they would not have remained in humiliating punishment.
Surat Saba’ – Ayah 14

Note: the above Ayah confirms that they have very little intellect. Any human being with basic knowledge about death would have been able to quickly spot that the prophet Solomon was dead. The jinn are so intellectually limited that they couldn’t even recognize that he was long dead.

And [mention] the Day when He will gather them all and then say to the angels, “Did these [people] used to worship you?” They will say, “Exalted are You! You, [O Allah ], are our benefactor not them. Rather, they used to worship the jinn; most of them were believers in them.”
Surat Fatir Ayah 40-41

And they have claimed between Him and the jinn a lineage, but the jinn have already known that they [who made such claims] will be brought to [punishment].
Surat AL- Saffat – Ayah 158

And We appointed for them companions who made attractive to them what was before them and what was behind them [of sin], and the word has come into effect upon them among nations which had passed on before them of jinn and men. Indeed, they [all] were losers.
Surat Fussilat – Ayah 25

And those who disbelieved will [then] say, “Our Lord, show us those who misled us of the jinn and men [so] we may put them under our feet that they will be among the lowest.”
Surat Fussilat – Ayah 29

But one who says to his parents, “Uff to you; do you promise me that I will be brought forth [from the earth] when generations before me have already passed on [into oblivion]?” while they call to Allah for help [and to their son], “Woe to you! Believe! Indeed, the promise of Allah is truth.” But he says, “This is not but legends of the former people”. Those are the ones upon whom the word has come into effect, [who will be] among nations which had passed on before them of jinn and men. Indeed, they [all] were losers.
Surat AL-Ahkaf – Ayah 17-18

And [mention, O Muhammad], when We directed to you a few of the jinn, listening to the Qur’an. And when they attended it, they said, “Listen quietly.” And when it was concluded, they went back to their people as warners. They said, “O our people, indeed we have heard a [recited] Book revealed after Moses confirming what was before it which guides to the truth and to a straight path. O our people, respond to the Messenger of Allah and believe in him; Allah will forgive for you your sins and protect you from a painful punishment.
Surat AL-Ahkaf – Ayah 29-31

And I did not create the jinn and mankind except to worship Me. I do not want from them any provision, nor do I want them to feed Me. Indeed, it is Allah who is the [continual] Provider, the firm possessor of strength.
Surat AL-Toor – Ayah 56-58

O company of jinn and mankind, if you are able to pass beyond the regions of the heavens and the earth, then pass. You will not pass except by authority [from Allah ].
Surat AL-Rahman – Ayah 33

Say, “I seek refuge in the Lord of mankind. The Sovereign of mankind. The God of mankind. From the evil of the retreating whisperer. Who whispers [evil] into the breasts of mankind. From among the jinn and mankind.”
Surat AL-Nas – Ayah 1-6

Sustainability in Consumption

The ironic story is summarized below.

Companies intentionally broke entire societies through sly marketing efforts, greed, and effective brainwashing campaigns. Those same companies now want to fix their broken customers’ consumption behavior in hopes to resolve a problem that they’ve created themselves. Talk about shortsightedness and shooting yourself in the foot…

Is There Life After Death?

The answer is a resounding yes.

It is known because Allah informed humanity in the Qur’an and all other holy scriptures revealed to previous prophets.

Qur’an is a framework for life and guidance for all of humanity. It was NOT just sent for the Muslims. That is the most common misconception.

It was sent as a universal guide for anyone seeking truth and answers to life’s pressing conceptual, physical, and metaphysical questions.

It doesn’t do the Qur’an any justice to call it a User’s Manual for life, but let’s call it that to make this explanation easier to digest.

This User’s Manual includes succinct instructions, recommendations, and warnings, all of which are put forth in the most polite and poetic manner. These are, after all, the words of the Creator.

Allah chose Arabic to deliver the Qur’an because of the inherent sophistication and depth of the language, yet he himself is not limited by time, space, or language.

It touches on all aspects that surround life from birth to death and everything in between. This includes us internally and externally, our home planet, and the universe(s).

It discusses Islamic eschatology and it acknowledges the injustice in this life, and thus allows humans to rest assured that justice will be served with the utmost fairness.

It informs humanity of creatures called jinn. We do not see jinn but they see us. We needn’t put jinn on a pedestal or think that they have super powers. They have their own attributes and we have ours. They mind their own business and we mind ours. Well, to be fair, the evil jinn don’t really mind their own business and play a significant role in the corruption on Earth.

In conclusion, the question has already been answered long ago.

Opt-out of inspectlet in Your Browser

I’m going to keep this very brief. Please explore if you want more details. On the website, inspectlet states the following:

Watch individual visitors use your site as if you’re looking over their shoulders.

Inspectlet records videos [screencasts] of your visitors as they use your site, allowing you to see everything they do. See every mouse movement, scroll, click, and keypress on your site. You never need to wonder how visitors are using your site again.

I don’t care how successful inspectlet is, and how well it improves businesses because it’s coming at the expense of the users’ privacy. It’s creepy, and that’s all I’m going to say. My suggestion is to universally turn off session recording for your browser by visiting the link below. Websites that have embedded inspectlet code will record your session, after which the site owner can play back your session, all without you knowing anything about this. Nasty, isn’t it?

Breaking Up with Microsoft and Windows

The year 1998 was a magical year; I was introduced to computers. Prior to that, I had no idea that such machines existed, and rightfully so as I was just 9 years old and we didn’t have computers in Iraq at that time. Since then, I’ve used Windows 95, 98, 2000, XP, Vista, and finally, Windows 7. Recently, Microsoft has been making business decisions that are far too controversial. As such, I’m ending my 17-year relationship with Windows.

I am permanently migrating to Manjaro Linux. I was introduced to Linux by mere accident in 2008 while randomly browsing websites, and was both dumbfounded and delighted by the fact that there exist free operating systems. One could almost say it was a revelation. Suffice to say that I got enthusiastic and decided to try Ubuntu 8.04 (Hardy Heron) no matter what the challenges were. It took me a while to realize that there was a thing called dual-booting, and I had no notion of Live USBs and virtual machines back then, so dual-booting with Wubi was the safest and only choice. Since then, I’ve used Linux desktop and server editions from different distros (aka distributions) to an extent that I feel comfortable to abandon Windows and fully transition to Linux.

Coming back to the main topic: I chose Manjaro Linux KDE (K Desktop Environment). Migration will take place on September 1st, 2015 as I need to create a full image backup of Windows 7 first. Time to claim back what’s left of my privacy.

Charlie Charlie Challenge – A Muslim’s Point of View

Just got wind of this new trend. It’s been two days (at the time of writing this post) since the Charlie Charlie Challenge has gone viral. I decided to write this post because this particular tweet grabbed my attention:

It does not matter whether this is real, staged, caused by gravity, or the pencil moves with the faintest blow of naturally flowing air currents. As muslims, we shouldn’t even think about attempting this, let alone actually doing it! A mu’min realizes and believes that there are other entities that live in this world. Those are angels and jinn, and other beings that only Allah knows of.

It may look like an innocent “experiment”. However, understand that something which may seem trivial to humans might not be so trivial to Allah. Besides, if this were to ever be deemed real, then perhaps the cross has something to do with it. Yet, think about it.. summoning demons is not simple. As far as I know, it can only be done by real wizards or witches who practice real magic to communicate with jinn and other entities.

In spite of all the above-mentioned; since the intention is clearly to summon a jinn (or as non-muslims call it spirit) by using those two crossed pencils, then this might turn out to be a legitimate act – unbeknownst to anyone performing it. Allah knows best.

So please, for your safety and sanity, do not ever think about trying this.

Easily Update All Fields in Microsoft Word (Table of Contents, etc) By Creating a Macro and a Button

Disclaimer: Kindly follow this tutorial carefully. I will not be held liable in any way for any misconfiguration mistakes that you, my dear reader, might make.

Note: In order for this to work, enabling macros in the options is a must. If you prefer not to enable macros, then this tutorial is not for you.

Follow the instructions below to add a Table of Contents update button to the Quick Access Toolbar in Microsoft Word (2013 and earlier), and make it work across all documents. By “all documents”, we mean documents that have been created, and documents that are going to be created on the same computer in the future. In reality, all fields such as the Table of Figures will be updated too, not just the Table of Contents, and that’s a good thing.

Let’s take it step by step

STEP 1

Create a new Word Document and open it.

STEP 2

Press ALT+F11 on the keyboard. This will open the Microsoft Visual Basic for Applications window. If you have trouble with the keyboard shortcut ALT+F11, activate the “Developer” tab by doing this:

– Click the File tab.
– Click Options.
– Click Customize Ribbon.
– Under Customize the Ribbon and under Main Tabs, select the Developer check box.
– In the Ribbon, click the Developer tab.
– Click Visual Basic

Again, this will open the Microsoft Visual Basic for Applications window.

STEP 3

In the left pane, navigate to “ThisDocument” under “Normal”, as follows:

Normal
Microsoft Word Objects
ThisDocument

STEP 4

Double click on “ThisDocument”. An empty (most likely) VB script window will open.

STEP 5

Copy and paste the following code courtesy of Gilles into the VB editor that was just opened.

'' Update all the fields, indexes, etc. in the specified document.
Sub UpdateAllFieldsIn(doc As Document)
'' Update tables. We do this first so that they contain all
'' necessary entries and so extend to their final number of
'' pages.

Dim toc As TableOfContents
For Each toc In doc.TablesOfContents
toc.Update
Next toc

Dim tof As TableOfFigures
For Each tof In doc.TablesOfFigures
tof.Update
Next tof

'' Update fields everywhere. This includes updates of page
'' numbers in tables (but would not add or remove entries).
'' This also takes care of all index updates.
Dim sr As range
For Each sr In doc.StoryRanges
sr.Fields.Update
While Not (sr.NextStoryRange Is Nothing)
Set sr = sr.NextStoryRange
'' FIXME: for footnotes, endnotes and comments, I get
'' a pop-up "Word cannot undo this action. Do you want
'' to continue?"
sr.Fields.Update
Wend
Next sr
End Sub

'' Update all the fields, indexes, etc. in the active document.
'' This is a parameterless sub-routine so that it can be used
'' interactively.
Sub UpdateAllFields()
UpdateAllFieldsIn ActiveDocument

End Sub

STEP 6

Save and close the Microsoft Visual Basic for Applications window.

STEP 7

Next, to add a Quick Access Toolbar button for convinience, navigate to the Quick Toolbar (next to the Undo & Redo buttons at the top left).

STEP 8

Click the little down arrow

STEP 9

From the drop-down menu, choose More Commands…

STEP 10

The “Word Options” dialogue box will appear. Under “Choose commands from:”, select “Macros”.

STEP 11

In the rectangular box under that, select the Macro with the name “Normal.ThisDocument.UpdateAllFields”.

STEP 12

Click the “Add” button in the middle of the dialogue box. It will be added to the rectangular box on the right side.

STEP 13

(Optional but recommended step). Click on Project.ThisDocument.UpdateAllFields

STEP 14

Click the button “Modify” at the button to change the symbol shape. Choose any symbol you fancy, and change the display name to whatever name you prefer. This name will be shown when you hover over the button in the Quick Access Toolbar. A name such as “Update All Fields” or “Update TOC” are some suggestions.

STEP 15

Click OK on the “Modify Button” dialogue box.

STEP 16

Click OK on the “Word Options” dialogue box.

STEP 17

Check that the button has been added at the top left in the Quick Access Toolbar.

STEP 18

Check the button’s functionality by creating a Table of Contents or a Table of Figures, then change a few things in the headers or figure captions, and click the button to see the updates reflected.

NOTE
This must be done once on every computer you use. If you have a desktop and a laptop, you must do all the above on both machines if you desire to have this functionality on all your computers. The reason is that this a matter of personalizing Microsoft Word, and such customizations are saved independently on each machine.

Recover Missing FlashGot Media Button

NOTE: This article is applicable to Firefox only.

Scenario

In Firefox, you used to have the FlashGot media button Capture somewhere on your toolbar. For whatever reason, now it’s gone and you cannot find it. Fiddling with FlashGot’s options also doesn’t seem to help.

Solution

Step 1

The icon only shows up when a video is detected. Open this video. Give the video 3 seconds to load first, then pause it.

Step 2

Click the menu button. Mine is located at the top right. Then click “Customize”.

Untitled

Step 3

Chances are the FlashGot media button is either hiding here on the top left side of the address bar, like so:

Capture2

…or on the bookmarks toolbar, like so:

Capture3

…or somewhere in the “Additional Tools and Features” panel:

Capture5

Step 4

While still in “Customize” mode, drag and drop the FlashGot Media button to wherever you like on the toolbar. I like to put mine here, as it is neighbors with the “Downloads” button:

Capture4

Tips

Left-clicking the FlashGot Media button opens a window like the one below. That is NOT what we want (at least that’s NOT what I want). In fact, we wouldn’t need to go through all the above if we wanted to see the window below.

Capture8

Actually, if we wanted to see the above window, the button below would be sufficient to do that:

Capture9

Do the following instead

Step 1

Right-click the FlashGot Media button.

Capture6

Step 2

Navigate to “Available formats”. I always like to download 720p or 1080p resolutions if they are available. Choose your desired format.

Capture7

Step 3

A window will pop-up asking where you want to save the video. This only happens the first time you use the FlashGot Media Button. After you choose a location, the video will start downloading. The next time you do this, FlashGot will not ask you to choose a location again, it will simply download it to your last chosen folder.

Conclusion

What makes using the FlashGot Media button so convenient is the fact that you can download a video in a certain format in just 2 clicks. I hope you found this useful.

Download Ninite Flash Player Updater

Update: 03-Mar-2016
>> Download links now point to MediaFire.

Flash player updater has since been pulled from the Ninite installer.

I obtained the file from Computer Wizard Indianapolis who was so kind to make it available to everyone since 2013.

Download

The installer contains both versions of Flash Player; IE and non-IE version. The only way I ever install Flash in Windows is by using this file, because it saves me unnecessary steps. I simply cannot bother downloading the executable file from Adobe’s website.

Batch Renaming From Text File with Bulk Rename Utility

In this video, I explain how you can rename multiple files and folders by feeding a properly formatted text file into Bulk Rename Utility and letting it do the job for you.

Tools used:
– Notepad++
– Command Prompt (aka cmd or command line interface)
– Bulk Rename Utility

For other non-English languages such as Arabic, Russian, etc, you must choose UTF-8 encoding for your text file upon saving it so that Bulk Rename Utility can detect the Unicode characters.

Thank you for reading (and watching).
